Open Spaces and Trail Plan Gets Award
Red
Deer County's Open Spaces Master Plan has received the Recreation
Industry Excellence Award for Parks and Open Spaces from the Recreation
for Life Foundation. The County, along with consultants Dillon
Consulting and EVS Labs, worked on the plan for four years after the
2003 Community Services Needs Assessment determined that residents
wanted more parks, trails and open spaces. The first project under the
plan is the Springbrook to Penhold trail which got under way last year
and is expected to be completed this year. Future elements of the plan
include trail linkages from Springbrook to the Red Deer River, the city
of Red Deer and Gasoline Alley. Another future element is a trail
between Red Deer and Sylvan Lake using portions of the former Alberta
Central Railway right of way that will connect with trails to
Springbrook.

Local
Wetland a Major Migratory Bird Pit Stop
A 164-acre marshy wetland, known as Slack's Slough, is a major pit stop
for white tundra swans this time of year on their 3,700-km journey from
Central California to their spring breeding ground in the Northwest
Territories. The marsh, located 3 km south of Red Deer and immediately
south of Gasoline Alley and east of busy Highway 2, is an exceptional
viewing area for other migratory waterfowl and up to 100 winged species
including mallards, grebes and red-tailed hawks. The slough is also home
to a large variety of other wildlife and vegetation, much of which can
be seen from a raised viewing platform. It's such an important natural
resource that Highway 2 was constructed around it rather than through
it. It was privately owned by the Slack family until 1979 when it was
purchased by the provincial government and has been managed by the
non-profit Alberta Conservation Association since 1997.

Airport and Buffalo Airways Featured in TV Series
The
Red Deer Regional Airport and Buffalo Airways was prominently featured
in the first season of History television's reality show 'Ice Pilots
NWT' and video crews returned to the airport recently for filming of the
second season. The show chronicles the operations of Yellowknife-based
Buffalo Airways. The company has operated since 1970 and bought a hangar
at the Red Deer Regional Airport in 1993 for storage and heavy
maintenance. One of the major story lines of the show was the sale of
two Canadair CL-215 waterbombers to the Turkish government that had been
used in the north. They were housed at the Red Deer hangar and needed
extensive modifications in order to prepare them for the trans-Atlantic
crossing. The company carries cargo and passengers as well as fights
fires.
Airport
Passengers Double in a Year
The Red Deer Regional Airport Authority is reporting that during the
first quarter of 2010 passenger traffic is almost double that of the
same period a year ago in spite of unusual foggy weather. It is
considered to indicate improved economic activity for the region.
Much of the traffic is through Grand Prairie-based Swanberg Air which
has increased its northern flights from three to five times per week.
Swanberg also offers service through Calgary to Swift Current, Regina
and Estevan, Sask. four times per week. In addition, Northwestern Air
Lease operates flights to Fort McMurray twice a week.

Springbrook Entrance Sign to Feature Harvard
Red
Deer County has announced that a voluntary survey of Springbrook
residents has resulted in a Harvard trainer aircraft being the symbol
most desired for a new entrance sign for the community. Construction is
expected to begin in late spring and completed in early fall.
The last
