Nine Years of Police Training at
Springbrook
Police forces from Calgary, Edmonton and the RCMP are in their ninth
year of public safety and crowd control training exercises at
Springbrook and the Harvard Business Park at the former CFB Penhold
military base. Included in the training is the mountain bike unit that
works and trains with provincial emergency medical service technicians (EMTs)
to protect them while they rescue and treat victims caught up in crowds.
Springbrook has proved to be an ideal venue for the exercises due to its
central location and its mix of buildings and urban environment.

County Starts Construction of Springbrook Park Trail System
Red
Deer County has started construction of a trail system in the treed and
meadow natural area south of the hamlet of Springbrook and Airport
Drive. The main spine of the trails is part of the Trans Canada Trail
system with branch trails emanating from it and will connect with the
town of Penhold along Range Road 271. Residents of the area have been
looking forward to the trail for several years. The county purchased the
natural area a few years ago when it was in the running for the
provincial police college. Some trails are expected to be paved and a
lookout is expected to be constructed near the wetland. Funding for the
trails has come from a variety of sources including the Trans Canada
Trail Foundation and Alberta TrailNet. The diagram above is a
conceptual plan from the county Open Spaces Master Plan but the final
routing of the trails may be somewhat different.

Air, two companies that are, or will be, providing regular passenger
service at the airport. Among the several displays, the Town of Penhold
had a booth explaining the progress of the new regional multiplex
currently under construction, the first phase of which is expected to be
open next year. Desserts for the event were supplied by Tipitinas.

Farewell to Zeke
Draws Several Community Members
The Springbrook Community Association hosted a 'Farewell to Zeke'
yesterday at which several friends and members of the community

years before the community became civilian and was renamed Springbrook
from Mynarski Park, the military residences for CFB Penhold. Zeke was
instrumental in the formation of the community association in 1995 and
was a historical resource for the community's recognition of its roots.
He is moving to Thunder Bay to be with family in October.

Bus Stop
Construction Costs Double
A report to Red Deer County council yesterday indicated construction of
the 13 bus stops in Gasoline Alley and 9 bus stops in Springbrook for
the new rural transit service would cost up to $460,000, approximately
double the original estimate. Surveying, asphalt and concrete costs were
higher than anticipated due to unusual terrain at some of the sites and
because Alberta Transportation required some sites to be relocated from
the original plan. The additional funding will come from the Municipal
Sustainability Initiative.
