Snowbirds
Do Double Flypast Over Airport
Canada's Snowbirds did a double flyby over the Red Deer Regional Airport
yesterday on their way from the Lethbridge International Airshow to the
Edmonton Rexall Indy.
Due
to weather concerns in the Lethbridge area, the flyby, originally
scheduled for around 4:30 pm, didn't actually occur until about 8 pm.
Several cars were parked on grassy areas and roads around the airport
waiting for their arrival. As part of the celebration of 100 years of
powered flight in Canada, the Snowbirds are scheduled to fly over 100
communities across Canada this year. On their way to Red Deer, the
Snowbirds also flew over Nanton.

International Aircraft Convention Held at Airport
About
120 members of the American Yankee Association from several Canadian
provinces, U.S. states, Great Britain and Germany have arrived at the Red
Deer Regional Airport to attend their 33rd annual convention between the
13th and 16th. It is only the third time the convention has been held in
Canada. The group is named after the Yankee, Grumman American's first
trainer. However, several other small aircraft manufactured by Grumman
are represented. The attendees are enjoying the fun, visiting with
others who have a common interest, attending seminars on maintenance and
plane appearance, and participating in a number of flying and
skill-testing events.

Summer Cadet Program Undergoing Some Changes
Over
this past weekend, about 150 staff cadets arrived at the Penhold Air
Cadet Summer Training Centre in Springbrook to prepare for supervisory
and training roles for the 1,300 cadets expected to arrive at various
times during the summer. A new two-week interactive general training
program will be introduced this year for 630 cadets age 12 to 14 that
will allow cadets to get a taste of a variety of hands-on cadet training
with less time in the classroom as well as learn life skills. Over the
next few years, new and updated programs will be introduced.
An
additional challenge this year will be marching on rough, and sometimes
muddy, roads created by the infrastructure rehabilitation although some
may enjoy newly paved roads by the end of the summer. The cadets are
arriving a little later this year with the first group at the centre on
Saturday, July 11 rather than around the first of the month as in
previous years. Another change this year is a new gymnasium floor that
has been built at the hangar for the cadets rather than using the former
community recreation centre. The music program continues this year that
will include a pipe band, military brass band and a reed band. The more
advanced musicians will be trained to take more leadership roles.
