Aviation Society Finds
Vintage World War Two Oxford
The
Harvard Historical Aviation Society reports that they have found an
Airspeed Oxford Mark V that was used as a training aircraft during the
Second World War at the former Penhold base. Located in southern
Saskatchewan, the plane will be donated to the future museum, perhaps as
early as next spring. It was made entirely of wood so a great deal of
restoration will be required. The society is planning a major regional
event late next spring.

Waskasoo Creek
Sub-Watershed Data Reviewed
The Red Deer River Watershed Alliance, set up under the province's Water
for Life Strategy, has presented results of a study that inventories all known data
involving the watershed, including the Waskasoo Creek sub-watershed. The
overall study covered all lands and tributaries that drain to the Red
Deer River, from its
headwaters in Banff National Park to the Saskatchewan border, where it
flows into the South Saskatchewan River. Data within the State of the
Watershed report includes information on the number of active and
abandoned oil and gas wells, municipal users, fish populations,
livestock densities and pipeline crossings. The data will help the
alliance develop policies to preserve and enhance the resource.
Information gaps that will be pursued will better determine the quality
and quantity of water, particularly on the surface and underground.

Waste-to-Energy Plant Two Steps Closer to Reality
Red
Deer County council unanimously approved a deal with Plasco Energy to
send all of the county's usable waste to the $100 million
waste-to-energy facility to be built next to the Horn Hill Waste
Transfer site east of Penhold. The county expects to save $20 a tonne on
the 24,000 tonnes of waste it will transport to the gasification plant
each year, resulting in an annual savings of $400,000 in trucking costs.
About $1.7 million is currently spent each year providing garbage
services. The county is one of several municipalities expected to
contribute to the 200 tonnes per day plant. On Monday, the city of Red
Deer committed 10% of its garbage to the facility.
