Springbrook Heritage
Urban Design Workshop June 12
All
residents, business people and stakeholder groups have been invited to
attend a workshop to develop strategies and plans for the future
development of Springbrook, including the airport, proposed industrial
and residential areas, central town centre and future park and
recreation areas.
A consulting group from Calgary has been hired by Red
Deer County to spearhead the project that will ultimately set guidelines
as to how the hamlet will develop over time. The county is recommending
that there be a particular emphasis on preserving the military heritage
of the community.

Peace Air Shuts Down
Peace Air has ceased operations as of Friday night. The airline that has
served the Red Deer Regional Airport for three years stated that that
high fuel and maintenance costs plus the reduction of oil and gas
industry related ridership were the reasons for shutting down. The
company has its fleet of planes for sale.

Motorcycle Sheriffs Being
Trained in Springbrook
Several provincial highway patrol sheriffs are being trained for
motorcycle patrol on the airport tarmac at Springbrook. A dozen
motorcycles will be posted around the province to deal with speeders and
other traffic duties, of which four will operate out of Red Deer. The
thirty officers are using Harley-Davidson Electra Glide police special
motorcycles.

Airport Funding Deferred One Year
The $2.2 million application to the Airport Capital Assistance Program
for new lighting at the Red Deer Regional Airport has been deferred one
year by the federal body. The current lighting for runways, taxiways and
approaches is 35 years old and needs to be replaced. The application also included replacement of
existing signing with fibre-optic ones that can be seen by pilots in
extreme weather conditions. Although the application will likely be
approved next year, the airport authority will continue to pursue the
grant this year. Airport movements in 2006 were 42,952.
Airport Seeks Road and
Services from County
The Red Deer Regional Airport Authority is working with Red Deer County
to install services and a road north of the airport in order to develop
more than 110 acres for industrial use.
New Retail Centre Under Construction in Gasoline Alley
Two buildings, one 56,000 sq. ft. and the other 9,000 sq. ft., have
started construction close to the Landmark Cinema complex also under
construction in the Liberty Park area of Gasoline Alley immediately
south of Red Deer. The occupants are expected to be home improvement or
furniture stores. Leons Furniture and Appliances and Sims Furniture and
Mattress Outlet Store already operate in the area. Completion of the new
buildings are expected late this year or early next year.
