Trail Committee
Appeals to County for Maintenance Agreement
Representatives
of the Springbrook Community Association (Darcie Phillips), Central
Alberta Regional Trails Society (Debbie Olsen), Trans Canada Trail
Foundation (Derry Armstrong) and the Penhold and District Lions Club
(Sheri Parsons) were in attendance at Red Deer County Council today to
support an appeal by the Springbrook-Penhold Trail Committee for the
County to enter an Operation and Maintenance Agreement with Alberta
Transportation. The major concern was the safety of children and teens
walking and bicycling between the two communities on the shoulder of
Highway 2A and that a trail to get them off the busy highway was urgent.
Alberta Transportation has given approval for the trail along the east
side of the railway tracks on the old Highway 2A roadbed but requires an
agreement with the municipality rather than volunteer groups for long
term maintenance. Paul Pettypiece gave a short presentation on behalf of
the committee formed to build the trail.

Open Spaces
Workshops Provided Opportunity for Community Input
Identifying
green spaces that need to preserved, historic sites, destinations that
need recreational trail linkages, river access and general attitudes
about how open space is defined and used, were all topics discussed at
six Open Spaces workshops at different locations hosted by Red Deer
County over the past week. Of the 65 people who participated, many
supported preservation of natural areas, recreational trails to popular
destinations, better access to rivers and more awareness of historical
resources. Others were concerned about irresponsible use of natural
areas and private property. Most supported the County's initiative to
assess resources and public opinion. From Springbrook, Jodi Smith and
Paul Pettypiece attended the one for the Innisfail area at Aberdeen Hall
on Tuesday and Gary Hillman and Paul Pettypiece were at the one at Red
Deer County Centre on Saturday. These workshops represented the second
of three phases of the County's Open Spaces Master Plan scheduled to go
to County Council this fall.

Anderson of
Craigmyle School Gone But Not Forgotten
Today,
the abandoned K-9 elementary school built for the children at CFB
Penhold was demolished after several weeks of salvage. When it opened in
September 1954 as Anderson of Craigmyle School, named after three local
brothers killed in World War II, it had 120 students and five teachers
expanding to 214 students and 12 teachers in 1955 and increasing to 265
students and 14 teachers in 1956. It closed in the 1990's and was sold
as part of the land purchase by Securfund Penhold in 1995 for the
Springbrook development. It was used
intermittently as part of the Cadet training in the summer and, for a
short time, by Chinook's Edge School Division.

Private Company
Now Conducts Motorcycle Training in Springbrook
After AMA decided to get out of the motorcycle training business, some
of the instructors decided to start a new company called Alberta
Motorcycle Training (AMT). They operate out of the Harvard Park Business
Park and a string of students are often seen practicing around
Springbrook. Each course runs 24 hours with 12 students in each course.
Up until 1995, the Alberta Safety Council conducted motorcycle training
at one of the abandoned runways, followed by AMA.

Young Eagles Enjoy Free Flights
and F18 Flyby
Twenty-three
kids ages 8 to 17 enjoyed free airplane rides and lunch on Saturday at
the Red Deer Flying Club.
The Waskasoo Recreation Board sponsored the Young Eagles event,
an organization that promotes flight opportunities for children. Each child
will get a signed certificate and picture of their flight. As a bonus,
during the same time, an F18 from Cold Lake was in the area to assist
with an air cadet event going on at another part of the airport. The
pilot did two flybys and, once on the ground, presented an opportunity
to chat and ask questions.

Springbrook and Penhold Still in Running for Police
College
Recently the province announced that some communities bidding on the
police academy had been dropped from contention and others are still in
the race. Both Penhold and Springbrook are still in the running with the
proposed locations chosen for each community only a few kilometers
apart. Others in Central Alberta still in the running include Rocky
Mountain House, Stettler and Three Hills. Meanwhile both Lacombe and
Olds have been dropped. A decision on the few finalists is expected
around June 15 with a final decision expected either late in the month
or in July.
New Fire Hall Expected to Open Soon
Sometime between June 15 and the end of the month, the truck bays of the
new fire hall are expected to be occupied by volunteer fire personnel.
The new building is closer to the airport than the previous location
which was a requirement for federal aid in rehabilitating the airport.
Red Deer County has not made a decision as yet whether to tear down the
old fire hall, renovate it for another use or sell it. The truck bays in
the old hall are being used until the relocation but the rest of the
building has not been used for several months due to mould being found.
Free Flights for
Kids This Saturday
The Waskasoo Recreation Board is sponsoring the Young Eagles event,
hosted by the Red Deer Flying Club located just north of the airport
terminal, this coming Saturday morning. Kids ages 8 to 17 can register
for a 15 minute flight to see some of the sites of the area. Each child
will get a signed certificate and picture of their flight. Young Eagles
was founded by the EAA in the U.S. of which actor Harrison Ford in the
honorary chairman.
