Sky Wings Gets New Flight Simulator
Recently Sky Wings Aviation Flight Training School, at the Red
Deer Regional Airport, received its new state-of-the-art flight
simulator from France. It's the first of its kind in North America but is used quite
extensively in Europe.
War Veterans Tour Former Air Base
Two former flight instructors of the British Commonwealth Air
Training Plan during World War II when the Penhold base was the No. 36
Service Flying Training School, were at the airport Sept. 24 to present
a commemorative plaque and tour the present facilities. Charles Owens
and Gordon Woodward, both British residents and former British Airways
pilots, have very fond memories of their time in Central Alberta when
they were young flight instructors. They also provided some memorabilia
for future generations to get an appreciation of the rich history of
that time.

Springbrook / Gasoline
Alley Area Structure Plan Final Draft Discussed
The County of Red Deer held their second annual Harvest Fair on
Saturday, September 17 at the county building. There were several
displays and discussions related to County residents. One of the
displays and discussions involved the final draft of the Springbrook
Gasoline Alley Area Structure Plan which was a concept of the
development of the area over the next 5 to 10 years. It included the
possibility of a population increase of 8,000 over the next ten years.
For Springbrook, an elementary school, a regional high school, a police
academy, sports fields, a new road running along the drainage ditch, a
commercial centre, two new access roads into Springbrook including one
connecting to 32 St. with allowance for a bicycle/walking trail and
continued light industrial and residential development are all
possibilities. The plan also
included a 'town centre' development west of Gasoline Alley and an
increase in residential development, as well as industrial development
east of Highway 2 along McKenzie Road. (see
Map of proposed Springbrook Area Structure Plan).

Springbrook Celebrates
10th Anniversary
In spite of poor weather conditions on September 10, Springbrook
residents celebrated 10 years as a community courtesy of Bear Training
donating its theatre at the last minute for the event. Although the
afternoon carnival had to be cancelled due to rain, the evening
festivities included a chili cookoff, bake sale, lots of games and
activities for the many children that attended, door prizes and dancing
to Rockin' Rob's DJ services. Hats off to Justine King, Melanie
Philbrick and the many other volunteers for their efforts to make this a
memorable event.
