What Bingos Do for the Springbrook Community?
Ever since Springbrook received its bingo licence in 1997, several
projects have been initiated, the majority designed for the children of
the community, as a result of many volunteers working bingos.
The Willow Crescent (Mynarski Park) playground was the first playground reconstructed in
1998 (using bingo, casino and grant monies), followed by the Oak Street
turnaround playground and Condo playground in 1999. The next major
project was the all purpose pad near the Oak Street playground
constructed in 2001 in time for use as a skating rink.
Several smaller projects were also made possible from money raised by
working bingos including Children's Christmas parties and other
children's events, beautification and landscaping, resource materials
for community events, facility rentals and youth programs.
In 2007, new vandal-resistant and maintenance-free park furniture was
ordered and will be in place in the fall of 2007 or spring of 2008. The
County will be refurbishing the playground equipment in 2008.
Future projects that the Community Association will be embarking on
include:
|
i) a community
activity and drop-in centre;
ii) a paved trail along the creek that will become part of the
Trans Canada Trail;
iii) beautification of the entrance to Springbrook;
iv) participation in the Penhold-Springbrook Trail, also part of
the Trans Canada Trail;
v) partnerships with the County and the Harvard Historical
Aviation Society for youth activities;
vi) possibly a roof over the all-purpose pad;
vii) the development of an annual summer and winter festival. |
Currently, the
Association has about $100,000 as a result of the volunteer fund-raising
activities of Springbrook residents including bingos and casinos.
Once Red Deer County completes the Open Spaces Master Plan, Recreation
Study and Springbrook Heritage Urban Design Plan, the Community
Association will seek grant money to supplement the funds already raised
to pursue the Association's goals. If one person in half the households in Springbrook would volunteer for
one 4-hour bingo per year, many more programs and projects could be
accomplished to make Springbrook an attractive and vibrant community.
Volunteers receive a free meal and funds are available to pay for
babysitters if needed.
